How to Explain Sex Work to Your Child

This semester in my Poetry and Personal Politics class we've been studying Natasha Trethewey (a former Poet Laureate AND previous Emory faculty member!). One of the collections we studied was Bellocq's Ophelia, about the fictional sex worker Ophelia based off of Bellocq's Storyville photographs.

Once in class our professor asked if we thought the collection could be taught to elementary schoolers. As an avid proponent of talking to kids about The Hard Stuff I immediately nodded yes, and was surprised to hear the resounding "No!" that echoed throughout the room. So, for my final creative project I decided to teach kids about Bellocq's Ophelia.
